The Mackerel No. 1
Gouache and watercolour on Canson tinted paper. Washes of metallic watercolours and spots of gold gouache create the flicker of water bouncing off the fishes scales.
Mounted and framed. 12 x 9 inches.
The Mackerel is not the most exotic fish but the shoals that swim through the seas around the British Isles have sustained communities for millenia.
Lives depended on them and lives were lost to them Songs and stories were built around them. The Mackerel has fed us and inspired us.
Their silver bodies catch the light filtering through the cold waters making their scales gleam like aliens living in a parallel universe beneath us. I sincerely hope this small image captures a fraction of this.
